Patanjali Yoga Sutra of the Month

II:39 Aparigrahasthairyi janma kathamtaa sambodhah
On becoming steady in non-hoarding, one gains complete knowledge of the how, whys and wherefores of one's birth.

Aparigraha is a wonderful Sans-krit terms that is rich in its etymology, and to which English translation fails to proffer its true definition.  Translated as non-hoarding, it literally means ‘a’ – not, ‘pari’- to fill, ‘graha’ – one’s dwelling place.  It means that we do not fill the dwelling place of our homes, or our chitta, our consciousness, as well.  It is an attitude of being abstemious and non-possessive, and keeping life as uncomplicated and as free from clutter as possible.  Aparigraha does not imply that we should give everything away, but more accurately describes our ability to let go of our attachments.  It is the personal review and taking of inventory to ascertain what our basic needs are, and what is extemporaneous on both the physical and psychological planes of our existence.
How we appreciate something determines whether or not we are in the spirit of aparigraha.  Can we enjoy that which we have, free fromtheclinging and fear of abhinivesha?  Or, do we sabotage our enjoyment and even our relationships as we are gripped in the fear of the unknown and the unpredictability of future circumstances.
The perfection of aparigraha brings vairaagya, detachment and luminous clarity.  Patanjali goes further to describe the perfection of aparigraha as having complete knowledge of one’s past, present and future.  When we can finally move beyond the need for other's approval, we are true to ourselves, and get a sense of whom we are.  As we recognize that life is sharing its bounty with us, we release the idea of ownership, and have time to reflect on the deeper questions of life.  In a high state of realization, we remember the wisdom gained from our past experiences, and even incarnations.  We no longer borrow knowledge from others, but awaken our own ability to observe, digest, intuit, and to recollect our insights.  Undistracted by the need to bolster a false sense of self or fabricate a persona for the world, we are free from the need to amass both intellectual and material property, and are able to connect with the deeper mission of our life’s purpose.  Our life becomes rich with a deep and meaningful inner life fused with intention, and along with our bhavana, offers nourishment to ourselves, and the others we come to meet.

I have been plugging away on my manuscript and only have four more chapters in my first edit. It is a wonderful feeling, and also a bit bitter sweet. Still, there is no need to get nostalgic just yet as I will then be sending it to an editor who has edited for Yoga Journal and written many articles of her own. It is a very exciting process, and I am learning so much. I will share some of my writing in the monthly Yoga Sutra in the column to the left. I hope to have the manuscript finished by the end of this year!
The next couple of months have some wonderful new additions to our schedule. As you know, my teacher Rama Jyoti Vernon will be coming to offer a four day intensive. The morning classes are sold out, but we are creating a waitlist. Fortunately, there is plenty of room for the afternoon/ evening philosophy and psychology classes as they will not involve practice, and there is more room for seated participants. Rama's insights and wisdom has already touched you as you have practiced with us at Yoga Hanalei and she is part of our parampara, lineage of teaching. Her transmission completely transformed my approach to Yoga and consequently has been integral in shaping me and raising me as both a teacher and a practitioner. I really hope that you take advantage of this rare opportunity to study with her.
Yoga Hanalei - Class
We are happy to be adding another Satsang on Thursday mornings. Jho Goodwin has made the generous offer of coming in on Thursday mornings to share her love of Satsang. We now offer Satsang on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays at 7am. It is gratis with the following class, and is a really magical time. We start with a fire ceremony and chant the Gayatri Mantra which set the intention of aligning our thoughts, deeds and actions with the intelligence guiding all of life. Next, we chant Patanjali Yoga Sutra which give us practical advice and insights into life and fulfilling our potential. Chanting is the perfect nuance to move into pranayama and mudra, practices that build, concentrate and direct energy. We then end with a 10 minute meditation. It is really a beautiful time to come together. Come check it out!
Our ninth annual teacher training is coming up this Spring! Remember, you do not have to want to become a teacher to participate. Deepen your understanding of the technology of Yoga and Self through this wonderful immersion into the science and art of Yoga. It is a wonderfully rich and life transforming experience, and truly one of my favorite times of the year. It is just not possible to touch upon the many facets of Yoga in a general class context, and during the training, I finally get to share my love for Yoga with students and develop deeper relationships with them. The conversations we share are profound, and I always learn so much in the process. You do not have to be an advanced student to participate, just sincerely interested!

Do you have a vacation rental on Kaua'i?
We are putting together a list of vacation rentals for visiting students that will be listed on our website. If you have a vacation rental on the North Shore, please send us an email at yogahanalei@hotmail.com so we can list it for visitors coming to the island that want to practice Yoga.     I am thrilled to be able to host a Yoga and Philosophy workshop with my Yoga Sutra teacher Rama, at Yoga Hanalei. Rama has been instrumental in developing Yoga as we know it in the US today. Her insights and ability to weave the tradition of Yoga into the current questions and issues we all face is amazing, and will transform not only your practice, but also your life perspective. You do not want to miss this event! Space is limited for the morning asana classes, but we should have plenty of room for the evening philosophy classes, which are my personal favorites. We will be welcoming many off-islanders for Rama's workshop, so be sure to reserve your space now!
