July 2018 News: Freedom & Liberty

Aloha Yoga Hanalei O'hana!

We celebrate July 4th as a memorial to the principles of freedom and liberty. Yoga is based on the same values. Patanjali Yoga Sutra II:18 describes the function of our life experience as a means for Buddhi, or conscience, to fulfill its purpose of Bhoga Apavarga - find enough freedom within to experience and enjoy the fullness of life. We are left to reflect what binds us from experiencing true liberty?

Studies reveal that on the average we have 70,000 thoughts per day,
of which 95% are repetitive and 80% are negative.

In the past year, I have had a very profound discovery in working with Eye Movement Desensizitation and Reprocessing (EMDR). First developed in the early 90’s, it has been successful in treating post traumatic stress disorders and unwinding trauma. Whether we have suffered devastation or vague tensions in  personal or social surroundings, our nervous system creates a neural patterning that holds the memory deeply. If an incident is  slightly reminiscent of such tensions it can trigger a full-blown reaction. We might also hold a baseline of anxiety that colors our general disposition and outlook on life.

After decades of practicing Yoga, shamanic ritual, various mind/body therapies and study of Patanjali’s philosophy and psychology, I feel that this work brings visceral ease and steadiness. It offers insights into stories and perceptions adopted that are inaccurate and self-limiting.

This is all supported by Patanjali's Sutra. Memories may effect our sense of presence. They accumulate into Samskara and determine our personality, belief systems, perspectives and values. They contribute to an over-reaching or pessimistic general outlook that results in disappointment. It is exciting to realize how modern modalities align with ancient teachings to support us in getting free to embrace the freshness of each moment eternal divine.

Yoga Hanalei May News: after a record breaking storm and flood

Shant-email May Newsletter

Aloha Yoga Hanalei O'hana!

Kauai April showers turned into a deluge when it rained 50 inches in 24 hours setting a new national record. Many areas of the North Shore were severely impacted, homes, cars and personal belongings destroyed, leaving many families displaced and stranded. The landscape of Hanalei Bay has new contours and we are struggling to repair large sinkholes and clear the numerous mudslides along Kuhio highway from Hanalei to Haena. Mahalo for your tremendous outpouring of love. For those of you who would like to make a contribute to families in need, there is a gofundme account @ILOVEHANALEI that is accepting donations.

It truly was “an act of God”. Naturally, crisis often brings the best out of everyone. FEMA has arrived, and locals are doing their best to aid one another. We are offering classes free of charge to those who have suffered due to the storm. We are honored to share the blessing of Yoga in its profound ability to offer solace and unwind trauma.

As I commenced my Yoga Sutra class in Lawrence Kansas, I could not help but reflect how humans are the only species that feel separate from nature to the point of attempting to lord over it. Patanjali instructs, “Erroneous knowledge is unsupported by reality”. When we are out of balance with what we ask of the Earth, Mother Nature speaks loud and clear resulting in an infrastructural collapse. Fortunately human lives were spared, and we have the opportunity to remember our  true nature as loving, supportive and unified in our efforts to help one another through the trials and travails of life.

“We must be satisfied with love itself,
because nothing can compare to it.” - Krsna

Bhavani and the Sanghat, or spiritual community at
Boulevard Yoga and Healing Arts in Kansas City

I just returned from a wonderful trip to Kansas. I made my first visit to teach in 2000, and several of the students have cultivated Yogik communities of their own. In the current age of pop Yoga where it is approached as a recreational activity, I am so encouraged by Yoga schools that explore the full science and art of Yoga. Whether we seek a beautiful physique or the transformational possibilities to shift ordinary perspective to the extraordinary realization of our divine origins, Yoga will meet us where we are at. The students in both Lawrence and Kansas City are so open and bright. I feel deeply touched by our time together and inspired by their deep interest and motivation to experience Yoga’s potential to raise individual and collective consciousness in mind, body and heart in the realization of love beyond a human emotion.

I am back on Kauai for the rest of the month and then off again for a wonderful Rocky Mountain tour that ends in Half Moon Bay, California at ENSO. I am also very excited to report that I have been invited to offer my classes online with Yogadownloads, one of the original and most established online Yoga platforms. Stay tuned, and I will let you know when you can access videos of my teachings.

Spring has sprung, and torrential rains have resulted in gorgeous perfect weather. This year is full of milestones. Yoga Hanalei will be in its 19th year of serving the greater Yoga community, and I had a hallmark year when I turned 50 this past March. Students honored me with a celebration after my Sunday Vinyasa class  and shared their gratitude for our lovely school and community. As my teacher in India would often say, “Much love is there!” Thank you for making Yoga Hanalei a part of your life, and growing me into who I am today.

I write to you freshly returned from the far reaches of Oahu's North Shore having shared Patanjali’s Yoga teachings and Asana at the Wanderlust Festival in Turtle Bay. It was quite an experience, and made me realize what a bubble I live in, in our extended Yoga community. I had somehow found myself in the mainstream of the Wanderlust Yoga Festival. Perhaps my teacher Rama somehow initiated the ethers when I last hosted her on Kauai in December when she said to me,” Bhavani you will carry on my work. We need to get you seen beyond the jungle.”

Yoga Hanalei February 2018 News

Aloha Yoga Hanalei O'hana!

We are on the crux of a lunar eclipse, and the intensity of energy is palpable! This moon is known as a "super blue blood moon" in Leo close to Ceres and the Moon which rule the feminine, the home, as well as our emotional natures. It is the last of a 6 month series of eclipses that began in August 2017, and the first of a new string of eclipses for 2018. A time of empowerment in which we clear emotional baggage accrued for the past 6 months, and clear the field for heightened intuitive awareness.  As is more than obvious, it prods us to reevaluate our psychological conditioning in how we treat and value the feminine in society, both in the work place and at home, as well as the inner realm of our personal psyche.
I am reminded of the quote:

"Our greatest battle is between the part of us that wants to be healed and the part of us that is used to being miserable"
- Iyanla Vanzant

At Yoga Hanalei, we are dedicated to creating a culture true to the Meriam Webster lexicon's definition:
The integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends uponthe capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations.

For those ready to dive into a supportive  group learning environment in the science and art of Yoga as healing, beginning February 5th, I will offer Yoga Hanalei's first ever Module IV teacher training. I look very much forward to working with the group coming from all over the country to participate in this more in-depth and advanced training. The only prerequisite to  qualify if you have done Yoga Hanalei’s Module I, II or II training, or completed 200 hours of training elsewhere.

Hauoli Makahiki Hou, Happy New Year!

The new year is calling us forth to, in the words of Patanjali, “relax, and yet redouble your efforts”. Yoga Hanalei April 2017 News

Aloha Yoga Hanalei O'hana

These past few weeks I have been joyfully inundated with visits from extended Yoga family. Fellow practitioners and students from as far back as 23 years ago have been visiting the island on their spring break. It is amazing how we can sit together and share the changes that have occured on our lives, and still feel a timeless connection with one another. In my reunion with Nicky-Sue Mueller (voted best Yoga Instructor in Jackson Hole, WY) I had the pleasure of encountering her friend, Kamia Shepard, a lovely Yoga teacher from Vancouver Island. Kamia shared that she teaches Yoga to 450 children through the Canadian school system, and sometimes brings the little ones to practice with Seniors. I was so touched by this beautiful offering, and the power of bringing small children and elders together to share in their love of Yoga! No matter where we find ourselves in the phases oflife, Yoga offers support through its practices and philosophy that help us function and embody an integrated epistemology in day-to-day living.

My son Nikola in a state of wonder - Samadhi!

My son Nikola in a state of wonder - Samadhi!

I recently heard a wonderful podcast on Yogarevealed in which Richard & Mary Freeman discuss their new book, "The Art of Vinyasa." The topic of vinyasa was discussed as Nyasa, an offering. Vinyasa means there are step-by-step protocols in making an offering with the final act as one of letting it go. What a poignant insight, especially as we find ourselves on the threshold of a new year. This is a time of culmination and the renewal of our vision and mission in the next year. Our vision entails our ideal for what we achieve, experience and offer in our lifetime as a unique expression of self. While our Mission is the step-by-step process and practical application of realizing our vision. As Lord Krishna says in the Bhagavad Gita, we cannot own the fruits of our actions, only our actions themselves. It is in our sentiment and skillfulness that we offerthe best of ourselves. Our lives become sanctified when we receive our challenges as an opportunity for growth and learning. A major determining component of our efficiency in realizing our vision is through practice, self-study and our ability to take feedback.

This only deepens my love and appreciation for Yoga and its deeper teachings. Such a pragmatic approach to observe the areas of which remain unrefined, and to systematically develop my ability to self-correct and grow into a more well-rounded and integrated being. Thank God, that through Yoga, we can actually get better with age!

September Yoga Hanalei News

I hope this email finds you well. I write to you from my home base of Kaua'i after a 10 week mainland teaching tour and family vacation in Greece. It was so wonderful to come home to Yoga Hanalei. "What a beautiful Yoga shala!", I thought. The field of love and intention is so strong here, and clearly it is the students and teachers that keep the energy going. Thank you for continuing to share your process and hearts in maintaining a sacred space for growth and deepening connection. Special thanks to all of our instructors and staff for keeping the spirit of Yoga strong in our community!

Niko meditating early morning at the
Santorini Airport on the carry-on luggage

My five city tour was wonderful, as new and old students gathered to share new babies, life changes, and revelations. Our focus this year was Bhakti Yoga, the heart of practice as the path of love. We examined that Love is not limited to a human emotion, but an energetic field that holds all of creation in balance. Transforming our experience of love is a process of developing spiritual maturity andself-esteem. We explored the Tibetan Buddhist concept of Shenpa, loosely translated as "the hook". Shenpa is our tendency to build a case aroundexperiences, in which we make ourselves (or others) right or wrong. It is fascinating to observe how quickly we fall into this trap. The Yoga Sutra encourage us that true freedom begins when we move beyond polarities. If we exercise tolerance and patience, we remember our oneness, and realize everyone is doing the best they can. We appreciate life as a learning experience.  Each time we open to each other, laying down our shields, we make an offering of trust to the Divine. Thank you to all of the participants and hosts for offering your deepest Self in holdingspace for individual and collective growth!

April News & Yoga Revealed Podcast Interview with Bhavani Maki

I hope this email finds you healthy and whole. What a wonderful month we have had! It was such an incredible experience to share my teacher Rama Jyoti with our community here. Students from all over the country joined in for the workshop. Rama inspired us with the depth of her contemplation and integration of the Yoga Sutra, and her work as a global peace activist. She elevated us all with her tenderness, courage and strength in her embodiment of Yoga as a lifelong spiritual practice. Many of us were moved to tears in the realization of the way Yoga empowers us all to remember our oneness and to cultivate loving kindness and peace.

After the workshop, Rama and I, with the help of virtuoso musician and Yoga Hanalei instructor Amit Heri, gathered at a local recording studio to record the 1st and 2nd chapters of Patanjali's Yoga Sutra. This was a great honor, and although it truly stretched our endurance, we were able to complete it in one day. Rama and I both immediately felt a huge weight lift off of our shoulders. I had promised to make this available to students for well over 15 years, and Rama for decades. It was a privilege as well as a responsibility to finally bring this into completion. Now, Amit who has so generously extended his expertise, will edit it so we can make it available to all those who would like to have a copy.

Rama Jyoti Vernon began her interest in    metaphysics and mysticism as a child, with parents who were pioneers in holistic health. Ultimately, she became one of America’s first Yoga teachers, and was instrumental in bringing many great teachers from India to the U.S., co-founding the Yoga Journal and developing organizations such as Unity in Yoga, to unite all lineages of Yoga. In addition to her extensive background in asana and the Yoga Sutras, Rama is extremely well versed in the philosophy, lineages and healing benefits of Yoga. Her unique approach emphasizes opening the body by extending and breathing into each pose as a deeply spiritual offering. She has devoted much of her life to peace missions throughout the world including the Soviet Union, Israel, and Central America.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy these opportunities to expand your experience of Yoga and Self!

Aloha Nui,

Yoga Hanalei February News

Aloha Yoga Hanalei O'hana,

I hope this email finds you well and content. It is so wonderful how pearls come to us throughout life. Like the Patanjali Yoga Sutra, a 1-liner might penetrate us to the core and help us to develop Viveka Kyati, or discriminating wisdom. I received such a pearl the other day when discussing a possible workshop in Utah.

"You can do anything, but you cannot do everything!"

I think that as we age, we naturally gravitate towards doing less, and to exploring refinement. Even our approach to Yoga practice shifts, where we utilize the law of Karma to our advantage. We practice postures well aware of the effect they have, thus nourishing not only our extrinsic musculature, but also balancing our intrinsic systems, such as our organs, endocrine system, physiology and psychology.

Such development of skillfulness is described in the Samskrt terms, "Sukshma / Sthula". We are able to penetrate the obvious to the subtle energetic realm, and consciously go to a place of receptivity where breath, movement and consciousness are transformed into Prana. The great masters concur that it takes an average of 10 years of consistent application before we are proficient in the practices, and 20 years before we really embody the wisdom in our lives. This is all based on the understanding that we have a relationship with a trusted and respected authority in our given field. In the modern boom of Yoga, many students are deprived of the steady guidance of such masters, and their practice only depletes, disintegrates and exhausts them. Simply to be in the presence of a seasoned teacher elevates the student on many levels, as the transmission extends from the obvious to the subtle, resulting in true embodiment.

It is with great pleasure that we invite you to join in a workshop with Rama Jyoti Vernon. With over 50 years of teaching experience, Rama has worked with some of the greatest Masters of the last generation, and is an embodiment of Yoga in action. Rama is responsible for igniting me personally with a passion for the Yoga Sutra, and has deeply informed how we approach Yoga at Yoga Hanalei as developing a total system of Self-care. It is said that "the teacher empowers the student, and the student empowers the teacher." Just to be in her presence is deeply transformative.
